Airport:
Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport
Project Name:
Terminal Apron Rehabilitation Project
Background:
This project involves the rehabilitation of the existing terminal apron. The apron is approximately 16,700 square yards and is composed of concrete. It is estimated that the concrete is 8-9 inches in depth with a soil subgrade.
Throughout the entire apron footprint, there is significant joint deterioration. Joint deterioration includes missing joint sealant, spalling, cracking, and wide gaps between slabs. It is expected that these joint failures could be causing the subgrade to erode as well. In addition to the joint failure, there are many mid-slab cracks, failing, and spalling areas. Both the joint and the mid-slab failures create the potential for F.O.D.
Project Description:
This project will involve the rehabilitation of failing joints and concrete slabs within the terminal apron. Where possible, existing joints will be cleaned and re-sealed. It is expected that there will be a combination of partial and full depth pavement replacement throughout the apron footprint. It is also expected that there will be some subgrade rehabilitation required.
In the course of the in-depth examination of the existing pavement, non-destructive testing will be performed to determine the pavement strength. Based on the results of this examination, it will be determined if an overlay will be required in order to accommodate the MD-83 commercial aircraft that is currently using the apron.
Phasing:
Depending on the results of the in-depth analysis and examination of the existing pavement, this project may include the rehabilitation of only the western portion of the terminal apron and the taxilane that is used most frequently by the MD-83 aircraft. Priority will be given to the western portion and the taxilane, and, if funding allows, the rehabilitation will continue to the eastern portion of the apron.
